SF State offers several charging options for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. As part of our commitment to offer secondary plug-in charging option, and in support of sustainability initiatives, we have partnered with ChargePoint to install EVCS on campus.
On-Campus EVCS Locations
Lot 20 Parking Garage:
- West Side (Upper-Level Entrance) – Opening May 9, 2022
- East Side (Lower-Level Entrance) – Projected completion – June 2022
Lot 19 Parking Lot:
- Across Lot 20 Garage – Projected completion – June 2022
Lot 2 Parking Lot:
- Corner of 19th Avenue & Holloway – Projected completion – December 2022
Before you can begin charging, campus members must first register with Parking & Transportation and be verified to receive the discounted campus pricing. Once verified, an email will be sent with a “connection” access code. University stations require campus members to establish a “connection” with ChargePoint to begin using the chargers. Follow the following instructions to connect for access to EV charging stations on campus:
- Sign up for ChargePoint or log in to your account in the app.
- To connect to SF State as a campus member, open the main menu, then click “Account.”
- Click “Connections.”
- Enter the connection access code provided by Parking & Transportation then click “Apply”.
- Enter required information, accept terms and conditions, and click Submit Request.
- You will receive an email notification that your request was approved.
- Once you’re approved, you’ll be able to start a charge and have visibility to university stations on campus in the ChargePoint mobile app.
- A parking permit is needed at all times. See Parking rates on Campus Parking Page.
- EVCS parking spaces should only be used when charging a vehicle. Users should be considerate of the needs of fellow campus members and move their vehicle to another parking spot once their vehicle is fully charged. Sharing EVCS allows multiple users to charge their vehicles during the day. The university reserves the right to impose fees for idle time when hooked up to an EVCS.
- Users are prohibited from manipulating EVCS in any way. Such actions will be subjected to fines, and/or suspension of charging privileges.
- Hourly rate fees will be charged for use of the EVCS. The following rates will apply:
SF State Community: $1 per hour up to five hours, thereafter the user will be charged an additional $10 for the remainder of time charging. Maximum daily charge will not exceed $15.
General Public: $1.50 per hour up to five hours, thereafter $10 per hour for the EV charge. An additional $6.25 session fee will be charged to cover the required daily parking permit fee.
- The university reserves the right to adjust fees and rates as necessary.
- All users will be required to register with ChargePoint to use the university EVCS. San Francisco State University does not assume liability of any damage to your vehicle resulting from the use of these stations nor for theft, fire or damage to any vehicle or any articles left therein. Use of the EVCS is at the vehicle owners’ risk and by using the charging stations, users hold the university harmless for any damages as a result of use of the EVCS.
- Users must contact ChargePoint directly by calling 1-888-758-4389 for any customer support, refund requests, questions or issues associated with an EVCS.
- Charging Stations are reserved for electric car parking only while charging. Unplugged vehicles will be cited per section 21113(A) CVC.
- SF State parking permit is needed at all times. Vehicles will be cited per section 21113(A) CVC.
- Please DO NOT back into parking spaces. Vehicles will be cited per section 21113(A) CVC.
The Parking & Transportation Department has the right to restrict use; make changes to existing EVCS; and/or eliminate EVCS without notice.
Electric vehicle charging station stalls may be closed for special event parking, maintenance, and construction.
ChargePoint EV Charging Stations FAQ
For over 10 years, Parking & Transportation provided nine free charging stations to the campus community. With the replacement and installation of new EV chargers, Parking & Transportation will roll out a pilot program to start assessing a fee to offset electricity cost, annual service fees, maintenance, and program administration costs. The revenue generated from users will also allow Parking & Transportation to set aside funds that would be used for future purchase and installation of additional EV charging equipment as demands continue to increase. With the California 2035 EV mandate, all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California will need to be zero-emission vehicles, and the fees collected will allow Parking & Transportation to purchase additional EV charging stations to accommodate the campus’ demand.
With the Level II EV charging station, most electric vehicles can fully charge within four to five hours. The additional flat fee of $10 is assessed to encourage users to move their vehicles and provide room for others to use the charging station. If the user decides to keep the car plugged during the entire day, the total fees charged will not exceed $15.
The public rate is $1.50 per hour for first five hours, plus $6.25 session fee that covers the daily permit. After the fifth hour, the rate increases to $10 an hour. If the user decides to keep the car plugged during the entire day, the total fees charged will not exceed $30.
When 1 car is using a dual port station, that car will get 7.0 kW and 30A which translates to about 20 rante miles per hour. When 2 cars are plugged in, each car gets 3.2 kW and 15A which translates to about 10 range miles per hour.
Parking & Transportation will work with the Office of Sustainability to re-evaluate this pilot program once we have data to work with and will review assessed fees if adjustments are needed. The new stations are equipped with a dashboard that will provide Parking & Transportation the needed data to assess the usage and the rate structure.

If your vehicle is registered in the State of California, the state requires that two plates be displayed, one in the front and one in the back of the vehicle (California Vehicle Code 5200). If you have a back-facing plate only, please park head-in so that our officers can see your registered license plate. Failure to park head-in will result in a citation.
There are three ways to start a charging session:
- Tap to charge. With the ChargePoint app installed, you can start a charging session by holding your phone over the reader symbol on the station. Make sure you have the app and are signed in to your account.
- iPhone: In the ChargePoint app, go to Menu, select Account and then Manage Cards. Pick "set it up,” add your ChargePoint pass to Apple Wallet and tap your phone on the station to charge.
- Android: Enable NFC, turn your phone screen on and tap your phone on the station to charge.
To use tap to charge, you’ll need iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7 and 7 Plus running iOS 10 or newer, Apple Watch Series 2, Series 1 and 1st generation or Android 4.4 or later with NFC.
- Start charging from the app. Choose the station and click the ‘Start Charge’ button.
- Use your ChargePoint card. Just tap your activated ChargePoint card (make sure to activate it) on the card reader symbol on the station.

After signup you will receive a free card within 7-10 business days. Once it arrives, you must log in to your account and activate your card. Go to My Account and select Manage ChargePoint Cards. Make sure you have your ChargePoint card on hand to enter the serial number and select save. You can also use your smartphone to start charging at any public charging station using Tap to Charge.
